Information about IBB PAS

The Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics was founded in 1957 and since then has been one of the leading research institutes in Poland in the field of natural sciences (category A + according to the classification of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education). Our mission is to study the molecular structure and function of organisms in relation to the surrounding environment. Research conducted at IBB PAS has been continually recognized by independent experts. Our scientists have 

received numerous prizes for their research activities, including the Prime Minister Award, and prizes of the Minister of Science and Higher Education, the Foundation for Polish Science and the National Science Center. Scientific investigations performed in the last 5 years at IBB PAS has resulted in over 700 publications in renowned scientific journals, including Nature, Science, Cell, PNAS.


Research activities at IBB PAS:


  • Investigation of viruses, bacteria, fungi, plants and animals using a wide range of modern biochemical, biophysical, bioinformatic, genetic and molecular methods 
  • Study of evolutionary changes in respect to structural, functional and comparative genomics
  • Metagenomic and metatranscriptomic analyses to examine environmental microbiomes and identify microorganisms of biotechnological importance 
  • Discovery of structures and mechanisms involved in regulating the expression of genes operating at different levels: transcriptional, translational and epigenetic 
  • Study of RNA metabolism, modifications and cellular functions, including non-coding RNA
  • Elucidation of the mechanisms that determine the stability of genomes
  • Determination of the structure and function of proteins and the role of their post-translational modifications. Examination of protein-ligand interactions to introduce a rational methodology for seeking specific inhibitors.
  • Research on the molecular basis of plant responses to pathogens and abiotic stress
  • Investigation of the biosynthesis processes and function of metabolites important for cellular activity
  • Study of processes that play key role in the development of many diseases, including cancer, rare genetic diseases, cystic fibrosis or COVID-19. Identification and analysis of bacteriophages with therapeutic potential
  • Large-scale analyses, i.e. genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics, using high-tech platforms available in IBB (including DNA sequencers, microarrays, mass spectrometers)
  • Study of the Antarctic ecosystem at the Arctowski Polish Antarctic Station (


Results of our research find application in medicine, agriculture and industry; a vast number of our scientific accomplishments have been granted patent protection (39 patents, including international patents). Our current research is financed from the funds provided by over 100 implemented grant projects (NCN, NCBiR, FNP, MNiSW, NAWA). Numerous studies at IBB PAS are conducted in cooperation with leading foreign research centers from the USA, Japan, France, Germany, Great Britain, Spain, Chile, Ukraine and Egypt.
